[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign.
[00:00:06] Speaker B: Welcome to Pugsley Crew Reviews Podcast. A podcast where we discuss all manner of films where they're good, bad, or anything in between. We'll give them a watch and tell you what we think.
Today we have joining us again, cure 9000.
[00:00:20] Speaker A: Hi Updude. Glad to be here.
[00:00:23] Speaker B: Nice to have you.
How you doing?
[00:00:27] Speaker A: Yeah, not bad at all, mate. How you doing?
[00:00:29] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm good, I'm good.
I've been rushing around a bit, but otherwise I'm good. If you can hear that sneezing noise, it's the dog.
[00:00:37] Speaker A: All right, bless him.
[00:00:41] Speaker B: Yeah.
So the film we are discussing today is a film called possession. It's from 1981 and it's a film.
[00:00:58] Speaker A: It certainly is.
[00:01:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
It's a film.
Right. So the. The premise of the film is initially is some guy comes back from working some way. I don't know where he was working for some agent. I don't know, some body agency. I don't bloody know. And he comes back to his wife and child, and his wife is like, yeah, I'm not really interested in you anymore and I'm leaving kind of thing.
And then it starts off, like, seemingly normal in that regard. It's like, oh, they've obviously grown apart in some way, shape or form, because that's what they're having a conversation about at the beginning. Lying on the bed together, like, oh, yeah, you know, sometimes this happens. You know, we grow apart and blah, blah, blah.
And then all of a sudden she like, vanishes and says she's at her friends, but she's not. She's with some other guy. Even though she said she had met any other guy during a conversation with her. With Mark. Her name is Anna, I believe.
[00:02:05] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:02:06] Speaker B: And.
And then it just starts getting weird. It shows him and her splitting up and then he kind of like goes into what looks like cold turkey.
[00:02:20] Speaker A: I was thinking that it looks far more like he's coming down off crack than he's going through a breakup.
[00:02:25] Speaker B: Yeah, that's. That's my thoughts. I thought he was going through cold turkey. I thought maybe he's a drug user or something and that's the problem. But no, I don't think that is the case. So it seems like he's got. And then he. After going through cold turkey, turned around, he's like, oh, how long has it been? And they're like, three weeks. I was like, what the.
He's just been in that room freaking out for three weeks. No eating, no In a pissing. Just. Just in his bed, rolling around yeah, it's weird.
And then it goes from that scene of him being all strange and then being like, oh, how long has it been? And then he goes to. Him going back to his flat where his wife and child are. The child is on their own.
[00:03:09] Speaker A: Yeah. How long was that kid on his own?
[00:03:12] Speaker B: I don't know, because she. I'm sure the kid says like a while or something. And then like Diana turns up after a while and she's like, oh, I'm. Usually you're on time frame and I'm like thinking, what do you mean on time frame? You wouldn't have had to put him there.
He came back and forth school.
That's one of the things like is he takes Mark, takes the kid back and forth school.
[00:03:40] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:03:41] Speaker B: So it's really strange.
And then I don't know what scene was next, but I was like, I think Mark is nuts.
[00:03:50] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:03:51] Speaker B: And then a little bit after, I was like, I have no idea what is happening.
[00:03:58] Speaker A: That's the thing with this film. To me, it's complete lunacy.
And everybody in it, no matter who they are, look at each other. Like they want to have sex with each other.
[00:04:11] Speaker B: Yeah, they do. Or kill each other. It's kind of like.
[00:04:14] Speaker A: Or both. Or both. It's weird.
[00:04:18] Speaker B: Yeah. So I had no idea what was going on. Then this. Mark goes to this Heinrich's house.
They have a weird conversation about sex and drugs and stuff and like that. Then Mark tries to hit him and then gets his. Gets the. Kicked out of him by Heinrich.
I was like, what the hell is going on with this really weird film?
Don't get me wrong, it gets more mental as it goes on.
[00:04:52] Speaker A: I decided to watch this on my own and not watch it with my missus because I didn't think she'd be into it. But I had to show her certain parts of it later because I was like, this has to be seen to be believed. I feel like I've been slipped crack or something. And I have to show you this so that you can tell me that this is as weird as I think it is.
And one of them was when Mark first meets Heinrich. Heinrich's like dancing around like some flamboyant effeminate gymnast, waving his arms in the air and circling and then rubbing Mark's chest. And it's. It's really weird.
[00:05:35] Speaker B: It is.
I don't understand.
[00:05:37] Speaker A: So over the top theater actor.
Oh, and does she really need you? And I have to let her be free and to express one's inner thing and be lost in the moment and it's just like, it's crazy.
[00:05:51] Speaker B: It is crazy.
I, I then wrote down my next comment was, why are they both insane?
Because it seems like everyone in this film is crazy in some way shape. They think the least crazy seeming person was Heinrich's mother.
[00:06:06] Speaker A: Yeah, probably.
[00:06:09] Speaker B: I was just confused. And then a little bit after this, she turns up at home again and she's being all nice to Mark. Anna turns up at home again and he's like, nice to Mark for a little bit. And then she's like, oh, don't touch me, I don't want to touch me. I can't stand you touching me. And then she freaks out. And then they argue a little bit. Then Mark starts smacking her in the face. Oh, wait a. Sorry. Anna hits Mark. So Mark like slaps her about 12 times around the face. She's sort of covered in blood.
And then she runs off downstairs and he just runs after her and starts shouting at her, you bitch, you bitch.
And then they like argued in the middle of the street. Then she walks in front of her truck, truck flips over and crashes. Then she looks like really wide eyed and crazed and just walks off.
I'm like, what the fuck is going on?
And then all of a sudden Mark turns around and starts kicking a football around with some kids.
It's like, what the fuck is this film even about?
[00:07:16] Speaker A: Genuinely remembering it backwards and stuff. There's bits where I can't remember what order they happened in, but I'm like, is this before or after she cut herself in the neck with an electric bread knife?
[00:07:31] Speaker B: Before this was all right, because it,
[00:07:34] Speaker A: like I said it, it kind of loops, doesn't it? It's argument, screaming part, come back together, argue scream part.
Yeah, yeah, like confused where you are in it.
[00:07:48] Speaker B: Exactly. And after this bit, Anna goes missing for a while and Mark goes to a private detective to start following her because he has no idea where she is. And then all of a sudden the next scene, she's in the house after vanishing, she's just there comes back.
I, I put like one of the notes I literally wrote down is what the is going on with Anna. She seems really off. Then again everyone does because everyone does seem crazy in this film.
And then, and then this is the scene then where she starts cutting herself with the bread knife, meat cut that whatever the hell it is, starts cutting her neck with it.
And then he stops her, Mark stops Anna from cutting her neck. Like takes her into the bathroom, starts dealing with her and she's all like seemingly happy with this. And then she walks off being all weird again. And then he's just standing in the kitchen cutting his arm with the cutter.
[00:08:59] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:09:00] Speaker B: And I'm like, why is. Why is she cutting. Trying to kill herself? And why is he now cutting his arms?
There's just no rhyme or reason to this film that I can see.
[00:09:12] Speaker A: I mean, I did think at one point, is this some kinky thing or, you know, I mean, it's a bit extremely kinky for me. Cutting holes in yourself with a bread knife, electric cutter. But, you know, I thought. Because it's like when he'd cut himself, she said, it doesn't hurt, does it? Or something. And he just like, blankly looks and. No, I'm just like.
I'm trying to find meaning in shadows or anything, you know, I mean, yes.
[00:09:39] Speaker B: Tell you what was funny, right?
There's this one scene where Anna is being followed by a private detective and she goes on a train and she sits on the train and then she sits by this weird drunk guy and this drunk guy turns and looks at her, takes a bunch of bananas out of a bag, takes a banana off p. The bunch of bananas back, and then starts eating the banana. I'm like, what the.
[00:10:07] Speaker A: I'm really glad you've mentioned that because there was three scenes in this film that I had to show my Mrs. And that banana eating scene was one of them. And even she looked at it like, what the is going on? What's this got to do with anything? It's an empty train can sit next to absolutely anybody or on her own and decides to sit next to the hobo with a wine bottle.
[00:10:31] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:10:31] Speaker A: And then proceeds to say nothing when he steals her banana and homoerotically eats one of them.
[00:10:36] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:10:39] Speaker A: Before I forget it. Because the one scene I really had to show was that the other one was Heinrich flailing about. The other one was early in the film and I forgot it till now. But the film, when they're in a cafe and they're having an argument and they're sat tables not with each other but like leaning sidewards to argue, and he's got about 12 drinks in front of him. He's got like a couple of pints and a teapot and a coffee pot, and then he dashes them off the table and then he's like throwing chairs and tables about and there's customer. Other customers there doing nothing.
And it takes about two minutes of him smashing the place up before, like the entire staff dive on him.
[00:11:20] Speaker B: Yeah, it's crazy in it,
[00:11:23] Speaker A: you know, I've worked in a pub and I've seen some arguments and I never could imagine you'd have let something carry on that long before somebody had intervened.
[00:11:34] Speaker B: It is crazy. There's not many people. Like, a lot of the places you see the pretty empty places, like, there's only like two people in the restaurant or cafe even.
There's one person on the train, not including the detective and Anna. It's really, really odd. And just when that happened, like, the people who came barging in and taking him down, they came from outside or something as well. I don't know where they came from.
[00:12:03] Speaker A: Now. You didn't see him until suddenly they're on him. It's a weird film.
[00:12:09] Speaker B: It is a weird film.
Yeah. The guy taking the banana was classic.
Classic. What the is this film I'm watching?
One of the scenes I also found funny is Joe the detective, who's following her.
Oh, yeah, following Anna. There's one point where he looks like he stands on something and then he's, like, rubbing his foot on the floor as if he stood in shits.
I'm like, oh, I guess he stood in shits.
It's really funny.
But honestly, one thing I'll say about the detective guy is he's done a really bad job of following her, like, in a discreet manner because she knows she's being followed by him and she starts running away from him and he keeps just chasing her. And it's like, what the is going on?
[00:13:07] Speaker A: Yeah, it's weird, innit?
[00:13:12] Speaker B: And. And then he follows her to her
[00:13:14] Speaker A: room,
[00:13:16] Speaker B: her new place.
And this is where it gets even more weird.
She goes into her place and is like, oh, I need to check for.
From the, like, management. I need to check the windows because we've heard this smashed windows somewhere. And she's like, oh, it's not mine. He's like, oh, you've just got back, so you might be mistaken. Can I please check them?
So she's like, fine, whatever.
But she should realize that was the guy who was following. I don't know if she does, but whatever, I guess. And then she looks. He looks around at the windows. He's like, oh, none of these are broken. She's like, I need to check in the bathroom to see if anything in there is broken. And then it's like, there's no windows in the bathroom. He's like, oh, I must check anyway.
And then he goes into the bathroom and there's this weird fucking squid creature there.
[00:14:08] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:09] Speaker B: And this. This is where they eat through me even more. I Was like, what the fuck is going on with this? I don't understand it anymore. I didn't understand it anyway. But I understand it even less now and then. She killed some guy. The guy, the detective guy. She killed him. I'm like, what the fuck? This is just going from absurd to stratospherically absurd, but in a good way as well. So I don't know.
[00:14:39] Speaker A: It's probably good to mention this is 49 minutes into the film when somebody's been killed. Yeah, I don't. You know why stuff that's happened had to take 49 minutes?
Because I don't think a lot's been established other than everybody's mental.
[00:14:58] Speaker B: Yeah, that seems to be the case. Everyone is a bit crazy, but, yeah, I don't know. Heinrich shows up again.
And I put. Heinrich seems nuts, too, because earlier on he seemed. He seemed like, flamboyant and stuff. But in this scene where he turns up at Mark's apartment and starts kicking off, he just seems completely insane.
[00:15:29] Speaker A: I mean, I just started to wonder, is it Anna? Does she just make men flipping crazy?
[00:15:35] Speaker B: Yeah, that's one of the things me and the. The missus discussed because I made her watch it.
And we were saying, like, I'm cruel. I know.
[00:15:46] Speaker A: Yeah, you're crueler than I was.
[00:15:48] Speaker B: Yeah, we were just. We were talking about it and like, you say, like, a lot of the time you see Mark after the whole breakup thing, and he's with his kid and he seems perfectly normal and there's nothing really wrong. Anna turns up. Then all of a sudden he goes nuts.
So I'm wondering if it's something to do with her because of the squid creature person thing or what.
But then the teacher.
This is the first time you then see the teacher in the next, in one of the next scenes, and it is clearly Anna with awakened contacts in.
It's obviously the same actress, but obviously she's meant to be someone else. And it can't be Anna because Anna can't be in two places at once. Because you see Anna killing someone while this teacher is in Mark's apartment. So it can't be the same person, but doesn't explain it, not to my knowledge.
And also, one thing I would like to know is, is what is the tentacle monster?
[00:17:00] Speaker A: It looks like something from Resident Evil, doesn't it?
[00:17:03] Speaker B: I have no idea what it is. It's just weird.
[00:17:09] Speaker A: It's like a sack of mince meat with tentacles are coming off it.
[00:17:18] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't know. And obviously it becomes less sack of Meat like becomes more human like as the film goes on weirdly.
[00:17:32] Speaker A: But the thing is, it's like when the teacher comes, she comes to check on the child, but then it's like mothering the child like some kind of unpaid child minder. Then she's washing up.
[00:17:41] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:17:42] Speaker A: And she's floating with Mark.
[00:17:44] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:17:45] Speaker A: Then she says a bunch of stuff to him that basically implies that in life freedom's whoever you want, whenever you want. And then the next thing she's in bed telling him they don't have to if he doesn't want to. It's.
Yeah. Again she's proven that she's nutty enough to be part of this film.
[00:18:04] Speaker B: Yep. I would agree.
[00:18:10] Speaker A: And then we get the other person from the detective agency turn up saying the first detectives, his partner. But he's rubbing Mark's hands like he wants to knob Mark.
[00:18:22] Speaker B: Yep.
Yep. There's something strange in this film. It's like everyone's horny for everyone and I'm so insane. At the same time, as many people
[00:18:32] Speaker A: in my life as some of the people in this film have torched everybody's walked around touching everybody. It's a autistics nightmare.
[00:18:45] Speaker B: So you now someone autistic yourself. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:18:49] Speaker A: Just.
[00:18:49] Speaker B: Just to make sure, just to let everyone know that you're not.
[00:18:53] Speaker A: Not being offensive.
[00:18:55] Speaker B: Offensive, yeah.
It gets a bit confusing and the show's like, I didn't know what was going on cuz I like Anna was all of a sudden a ballerina about a ballet instructor. I was like, since when is Anna a ballet instructor? And then I was like, oh, it's a video that's being watched because I didn't realize. And also in that video she was really mean to the girl she was showing. And then she told the camera and yeah, someone needed taught me that being a no, but saying like you need to be like resilient and tough and stuff like that to get anyway. And I know she seemed mean as in that didn't seem crazy, she just seemed really nasty.
[00:19:35] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:19:39] Speaker B: And then she turns up again to Mark's place and then she's after killing that guy and she's like constantly rubbing her hands and Mark's like, you know what? When you're not around, it's nice and quiet and then you come here and it's like so much going on and stuff like that and it's too much noise. And Mark's like, can't we just sit down and see if we can be quiet together for 5? And stuff like that. And she's like it was quiet before you came back as well and shit like that.
And then they do sit down together, but Mark sits there quietly for a minute where she's just going like crazy, rubbing her hands and speaking nonsense.
And she's in. What my miss has said she's getting more manic. Anna was. Yeah, she was having manic episodes or something.
[00:20:38] Speaker A: I mean, I expected it all to head up to the fact that she'd sold her soul to the devil to make this creature or something, but it's all just conjecture because it never goes anywhere really.
[00:20:52] Speaker B: No, it doesn't.
And then, and then while they talk in I think Anna explains about the miscarriage she had.
I believe she said miscarriage.
And it shows her in the underground area, in the tunnels to the subway or everyone call it underground subway.
And it shows her like having this weird freaky thing going on where she's like screaming and flinging her food around that she's just done shopping with. And then all of a sudden all like white starts coming out of our eyes and mouth and then blood does as well. And then he says. And then Mark says something. Oh, there's never a time I thought I could find you horrid as now or something like that. And I'm like, what the is this film on about? I don't understand. I don't. I don't know what the meaning behind this film is.
[00:21:43] Speaker A: No, it's.
[00:21:44] Speaker B: If there is one.
Yeah, that scene was really fucking weird.
Should have showed you Mrs. That as well.
[00:21:54] Speaker A: Yeah, probably.
[00:21:56] Speaker B: And obviously that happens. She kills the other detective. You see that the squid creature is becoming more human.
And then it shows Heinrich go to that house and we. Anna's now living. And Heinrich is like, oh my God, what's going on? Why are you being like this? Come on, you. You know I'm stronger than you. I want to kind of thing like that. Which is a bit weird considering he was supposed to be like a nice guy.
But then again this, the film. And then she goes to the kitchen and opens the fridge and in the fridge you can just see body parts. And Heinrich freaks out. And then Anna starts saying stuff to him. I can't remember what exactly, but she's like, oh, like cut in little chunks out of him and then stabs him. And then Heinrich runs off, which I'm surprised she let him run off.
[00:23:00] Speaker A: Yeah, I was a bit surprised about that.
I was surprised that Heinrich called Mark and not the fucking feds.
[00:23:12] Speaker B: Yeah, you would think you would phone the police because I think they'd be able to deal with it better than Mark actually says to him though. Why didn't you phone the police?
[00:23:26] Speaker A: Yeah, he does, to his credit. Yeah.
But I think that was to check if he had.
[00:23:32] Speaker B: Ah, Mark was weird as well, because after this, Mark goes to Anna's new flat, finds the body parts, sets it up so that the house will blow up.
He then leaves, meets up with Heinrich, they have a conversation, then he goes into the toilet, fills the toilet with sick and water, and then knocks Heinrich out and drowns him in his sick and water.
It's like, what I don't get, why is he now doing this?
[00:24:16] Speaker A: Oh, I think he was getting rid of him because he thought he'd like give Anna into the police or something, but he was killing him in a way that looked like he'd got drunk past that. And he's sick.
Yeah, because I think like he's figured out that Anna is killing people and stuff. And he's like so obsessed with her that he's like, well, if it means she'll be with me and be okay with me, I'm gonna go Bonnie and Clyde it with her. And
[00:24:48] Speaker B: yeah, it's just weird to me. It's like comes out of the way. He's like, oh my God. Because when he sees the body part, he does go nuts again. Like he's like freaking out, out the window. And then he just goes, oh, you know what? Fuck it, I'm gonna help her out. And it's like, what?
And then Mark goes to Heinrich's house, speaks to Heinrich's mother, and they have a conversation and he's like talking to Heinrich's mother and says, yes, Anna did kill him. Or he did fight Heinrich. Heinrich was dead. He didn't let on that he killed Heinrich, but Heinrich is dead.
And then Heinrich's mother's like, well, I don't want to be in a world without by Heinrich. So I'm pretty sure she takes a load of pills and then as a drink and then goes to bed to die.
Yeah, because I guess it was too much to not have her child around.
And this is the most sane person in the film.
[00:25:49] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:25:51] Speaker B: And from you it gets really weird.
At some point, Mark has dropped his child Bob off to the teacher because she's.
She's helping him for some reason. I don't know why. I don't know why they quite close considering they've just met.
It's really weird.
And then he drops the child off and then deals with all this stuff with Heinrich.
Then he comes back to his apartment.
In his apartment, just outside his apartment is.
I can't remember, named Marjorie or something.
[00:26:38] Speaker A: Yeah, Marjorie who?
[00:26:40] Speaker B: They don't seem to like each other. But also I'm sure they were at some point.
[00:26:48] Speaker A: Yeah. She was reaching out and rubbing him and stuff. And I thought you seemed like you hated each other. It's. Yeah. Everyone wants to shag everyone in this.
[00:26:56] Speaker B: Yeah, but she had a slit, a net slit. She had her neck slit and she was like bleeding out. And then instead of him helping her, he drags her into back to his apartment and just puts a dead body in the bathroom.
I know, I'm not sure actually. I think the boy, Bobby or something was. Bob was still actually in the house at the time.
[00:27:29] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:27:29] Speaker B: I think it's after this that she. He gets taken to the teacher.
[00:27:35] Speaker A: I know. The teacher gives him a piece of paper.
[00:27:39] Speaker B: Yeah. At one scene it just says his own name.
[00:27:42] Speaker A: Yeah. And I thought you've already laid in bed with him with your tits out in the air and now you're telling him your name.
[00:27:49] Speaker B: Yeah, because he keeps calling the miss teacher, don't he?
Obviously you must be more than that because you went to her house with a child. So must be more information on that piece of paper than just her name.
[00:28:04] Speaker A: She also says to him at one point, I want you to promise me something. And he's like what? And she's. Now you've got to promise me before I tell you. And I don't think she ever tells him what he's promised or if she did. I couldn't zone that.
[00:28:18] Speaker B: I. I don't. I. Yeah, I'm guessing it's something that we not meant to know what it is knows.
So from Euronico's weirder, Mark takes the dead body of Marjorie back to Marjorie's house in his car, tells Anna to meet him at Marjorie's house, which he. They do. He walks in there and she's in the middle of having sex with the squid creature thing, which now has a hay.
Which is really odd.
[00:28:53] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:28:54] Speaker B: And he freaks out again and leaves.
And then when he comes back he makes some. He sees a. Police are at that house.
I don't know why all of a sudden police are at the house.
Nothing is explained.
There's police going to Marjorie's house. Marjorie hasn't been confirmed killed by anyone.
Anna, they wouldn't know Anna would be there. So that doesn't. I don't understand why the police are there all of a sudden.
[00:29:27] Speaker A: No,
[00:29:29] Speaker B: it doesn't make sense to me. And then obviously he Loses the plot a bit, gets in a taxi, tells the taxi driver. He's like, drive back the attack the car straight into the police. He's like, my pleasure, sir.
And rams the police car.
Then Mark goes out and runs and shouts something. I think he shouted something to.
To Anna, maybe. But I. I couldn't quite make up what it was.
Did you?
[00:30:00] Speaker A: No, I have not a clue.
[00:30:02] Speaker B: And then he gets shot a lord and. But fucks off on a motorbike after shooting a couple of police officers.
And then for some reason, he's riding fine on his bike, and then he turns down an alleyway and then decides to flip off his bike. And I have no idea why. I don't know if he was meant to have slipped on something, but it just looked like he was like, oh, fuck this, I'm jumping off my bike.
[00:30:27] Speaker A: Yeah, it looked totally purpose. It didn't look accidental at all. So.
[00:30:32] Speaker B: And then it shows him then struggling to climb a staircase.
Mark is climbing and climbing and climbing, and he's almost to the top. And then he collapses on the floor as if he's about to die because he's been shot several times by the police.
And then all of a sudden, Anna turns up and he's like, how did you find me? And I'm sure she says, I'm sure he says, how did you find me? And she says, how could I not?
Don't understand that.
[00:30:59] Speaker A: No, I don't.
[00:31:00] Speaker B: And then she says, I need to show you what he's become. And it shows. The squid person is now basically Mark, but with dark eyes and he's wearing his shirts basically like Heinrich does. So I think he's like an amalgamation of people, but mainly Mark.
[00:31:22] Speaker A: Yeah, something like that. Because there was a thing earlier where Heinrich's mom said, I know he's dead, and I saw his body, but his soul wasn't there.
So I can only think that this thing is parts of souls of people. It's been either killed or partially responsible for the death of. Or something. Or.
[00:31:54] Speaker B: Yeah, I have no idea.
But after this, Mark's about to shoot the squid man, doesn't get to shoot the squid man because then all of a sudden, the police start shooting up this building. No idea how they knew he was there, but they did.
They shoot up there. Anna get shot, Mark gets shot more, I think. The squid person, I think, gets shot, but it's perfectly fine.
And then.
And then Anna and Mark start kissing each other. And it's all weird and gross because they're like, in the middle of dying.
I don't care.
And then Anna shoots herself in the back and kills herself.
I think she must have used Mark's hand maybe to do it. Weird how she did it.
[00:32:40] Speaker A: Yeah, it's weirdly contorted, isn't it? Yeah, it's like hands behind the back and it's strange.
[00:32:46] Speaker B: Yeah.
And then Squid man decides, like, I've had enough of this, and leaves. Asks the woman to. Some woman to help him, like, leave. And she does as if, like, she can't say no. She just does what he says.
Weird.
And then all of a sudden, Mark decides to flop himself over the banister to die on the floor at the bottom of the stairs.
And that isn't the end of the film, though you would think it is.
The end of the film is Squidmark goes to the teacher's house and is banging on the. Knocks on the door.
Some reason the child is screaming, don't open the door. Don't open the door. But the teacher's like, I must.
And then she goes to open the door. The kid's like, no, don't open the door. Runs off upstairs, and then drowns himself.
And then the teacher turns around from the door without open air, turns around and has, like, this slight grin.
And then I'm like, what the is this ending? And then there's loads of sounds of, like, guns and bombs and whatever and planes. And I'm like, I don't understand what this ending is. Is she one of the weird squid people as well?
Is that what it's implying?
[00:34:12] Speaker A: I mean, it.
It's almost as if before we've started watching the film, Anna's been replaced by something weird.
And then it's coming full circle that Mark's now been replaced by something weird. You know what I mean? It feels like it's part of a chain that we're not. We're privy to the middle of, but not the real start or end.
[00:34:35] Speaker B: Yeah, I have no idea. I don't understand the film. Like I said, the thing is, is the evil squid Mark person is basically Mark with contacts and a slightly different attire, whereas the teacher is Anna with different hair and different eye color. So, like I'm saying, is she meant to be a squid or is Anna meant to be a squid or what? I don't think Anna is, because I have no idea. I don't understand what they were trying to get.
Get at.
It was a weird film. Very, very weird film.
[00:35:12] Speaker A: I mean, it's two hours, and I'd say an hour of absolutely nothing needs trimming off. It and 30 minutes of explaining tissue needed adding to it.
[00:35:27] Speaker B: I, I was confused by it. I kind of enjoyed her in a weird way. Like, I wouldn't say it's a good film. It, for me personally, it's not. For some reason, I enjoyed the zaniness of it because it is just really weird. But I also don't understand the film. So I, I take that as how you. How you will.
[00:35:48] Speaker A: I mean, it reminded me in some ways of Dario Argento movies, the guy that did surprise you or whatever.
[00:35:59] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:36:00] Speaker A: And that's Italian horror. So I'm wondering whether this.
Even though clearly that guy Sam Neill is either English or American, because he's the guy at Jurassic park, isn't he?
[00:36:11] Speaker B: Yeah. I'm not sure if he's English or Australian, to be honest,
[00:36:16] Speaker A: but I'm like feeling that maybe if this is Italian in origin or that there's just something we're missing because.
[00:36:25] Speaker B: Yeah, like Germany or France or something.
[00:36:32] Speaker A: Yeah,
[00:36:34] Speaker B: I, I have, I, I have no idea. But this film is what I would call very, very strange. It's kind of interesting to watch and I think people should watch it just so they can be confused and come away from it going, what the was that? But at the same time, I wouldn't say it's a particularly good film.
[00:36:52] Speaker A: If somebody understood this on any level and had 15 minutes to explain it to me, I'd appreciate it.
[00:36:58] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
I am wondering was I.
[00:37:04] Speaker A: Sorry, I can't pretend to understand it and I'm not gonna try and explain it to anybody.
[00:37:09] Speaker B: No, no, I, I haven't got a clue. But like at the end, I don't understand why the kid was so freaked out about the door. Why would he be like.
Why, why would he then drown himself?
Why would the teacher be like, kind of smirky?
Why is Sam Neill kind of like Mark Squid Mark, like rubbing himself against the outside of the door?
I dunno. It's a weird one. It's a really weird one.
[00:37:45] Speaker A: Yeah, it is.
[00:37:48] Speaker B: Jesus.
Honestly, I don't know what else to say about this film. It's very, very strange.
I don't personally understand what it's gearing at.
I don't understand the squid person. I don't understand why everyone is so messed up in the head.
It's just a weird, weird film.
But worth a watch.
[00:38:13] Speaker A: Yeah, it's definitely an interesting film.
[00:38:17] Speaker B: Yeah, I agree.
Is there anything you'd like to add before we end?
[00:38:25] Speaker A: Not I can think of about this film.
I always like to mention when actors die, particularly if they're in stuff I like. And Walter Coining died the other day. Didn't he chek off from Star Trek?
[00:38:41] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:38:43] Speaker A: So maybe we'll have to watch something with him in at some point in the future to.
Yeah, I mean, I can think there was a film with him and Bruce Campbell in. That's relatively low budget, and low budget seems to be our wheelhouse.
[00:38:58] Speaker B: Yeah, it does.
[00:39:00] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:39:00] Speaker B: I'm up for watching something with him in. But thinking about it, Sam Neil died not that long ago as well.
[00:39:06] Speaker A: Yeah, he did. I think that must only be a month or two.
[00:39:10] Speaker B: Yeah.
Crazy.
But, yeah, I guess that's gonna be us then. I would recommend you watch this film for the poor mind that it is.
But if you're expecting, like, a cohesive story, you're not really gonna get one. At least to me. I, I, maybe I'm just a. But I just didn't. I don't understand anything about it.
[00:39:38] Speaker A: No, I don't.
[00:39:40] Speaker B: So there you go.
Anyway, thank you, Kerr, for taking part.
[00:39:45] Speaker A: You're very welcome.
[00:39:47] Speaker B: And that's gonna be us, so. Bye. Bye.
[00:39:50] Speaker A: Bye.
There's nothing to fear except God, Whatever that means to you.
For me, God is a disease.
